BMPRO Beauty Workshop in pictures.

Hey there beautiful people ,

It was a special day yesterday, which is why i want to take out time to wish all the “men” a happy fathers Day in arrears , God continue to bless you as you hold the family firm together.

Sometimes last week, I attended the one-day-hands-on workshop organized by BMPRO – it was such a fun learning experience. The plan as always was to be open to learn anything from anyone which has invariably helped me to be a better person.

There were 3 classes, Makeup with BMPRO, Gele tieing with Segun gele and Hair styling with Lyzadora and they all happen to be professionals on top of their game. Baileys was the sponsor of the day and they had a mobile bar setup for the event, there were also refreshments like Small chops and Chapman.I had to pass on the drink Image may be NSFW.

, I am pretty sure you don’t want me reporting what didn’t go down Image may be NSFW.

;)

There was also Nkechi from Bellanaija  who spoke about social media  and business  highlighting  that as a professional makeup artist one must invest in a good camera to capture your works , look for a good retoucher to edit your pics a little bit ,develop a logo and always watermark your pictures, make a short note on the pictures so that people can relate with it and finally develop a signature look

Banke Meshida Lawal aka ‘Queen B’ needs no introduction if you are a makeup lover or artist ,she is a celebrity makeup artist with a Midas touch. Her works are a constant source of inspiration and she is very talented and has continually opted to set a standard for other makeup artists to follow.

Queen B demonstrated how she does her bridal makeup showcasing also all the products she uses. The transformation on the model was sensational and i have soaked in enough to make me better , she also took out time to answer all questions raised about products as well sighting useful tips.

Top makeup artist Segun gele from Huston who by the  happens to be a fantastic teacher with his interactive session .A few makeup artists volunteered to show him how we tie gele here in Nigeria , he went further to demonstrate how he does his special gele without holding back on technique. He has indeed carved a niche for himself in gele tying.

To cap it all was lyzador, who is a top makeup artist also from Huston ,she took us on hair styling class which for me is about the main reason i attended , i particularly love her edgy style. She made hair styling look so easy with her demonstration and  great tips .

I had at the event what could be best described as mad fun , there were also
makeup products on sale at discounted prices.

I urge you not to miss the next one, enjoy what went down below :

I have put together some tips on how to make the most of your time and money at any beauty/makeup events. Usually there are a lot of makeup products, beauty products, hair, fragrance etc to buy from, both indigenous and foreign brands so decision making isn’t an easy task, you might end up breaking the bank . It is most times overwhelming and you probably dont have a clue where to start from , OK  here are few tips to demystify event shopping :

Its pays know what you are looking for , preferably have a list.Specify what it is you want –  eyeshadow, mascara or lip gloss so that way you don’t end up with the products you dont need.

Make sure you consult a makeup artist or a sales person to educate you more about the brands and recommend what you need to you.

Testers / Samples are great ways of knowing if a product works well with you or not so that you can make an informed decision in buying i.e foundation, powder etc

Ask if they offer discount cards , this allows you to buy product products at reduced rates.

Return policy is very important ,find out if you can return the product in exchange for another or not.

Ask to be notified when they have sales

Dress comfortable-most times if your aren’t wearing the appropriate clothes it might be a big problem when shopping for makeup, be casual with a comfortable pair of shoes preferable sandals or sneakers

Don’t be in a hurry to buy, go round the stands and drop your name ,complimentary card and number, introduce yourself and network with others and try to have fun.I would also advise you go with a friend its more fun with a crowd.

Make sure you go with cash and  your ATM card to make your purchases

Don’t hesitate to ask for freebies..

See ya there!!!

Why you need a Makeup Service Contract.

Hey guys,

I have been meaning to share some of my worst experience as a makeup artist and what i have learnt from them but i have held back for whatever reason , I have finally summoned the strength.Fair Warning : This is a long post but i can assure you that you will learn from it even if you aren’t a makeup artist.

Have you ever had brides cancelling last minute because  their “big aunty” wanted to surprise her with a makeup artist?  OR  she suddenly found out she’s on a budget and would rather do it herself to save money??  OR   her uncle’s daughter’s sister just finished makeup school and would do it for free ?- if you have, permit me to say i feel your pain but there is more …..

How about when you missed out on a good night sleep just to wake up early and get to the brides place only to find her she is not even awake yet? hence the long wait OR  you have another job and you are  running late just because your client feels she has paid you and so you have to hang around the whole day to justify how much you have charged? OR clients taking advantage of our verbal agreement and since i have no record i succumb to their bid.

I got fed up especially after what happened to me on Thursday, I am going  to start making deliberate effort to send out my contract irrespective of whether my clients are old or new .

My Thursday ordeal got me all rattled , I got a call from a client that needed my services for a shoot,we discussed and verbally agreed and i asked her to send me a text message with the address and time. Its noteworthy to say  I would have sent her my contract but i felt since i had closed the deal, there was really no need.

Call time was suppose to be for 7am to end 8am. I pulled some stunts and made it to the location by 6:50 am ,lo and behold there was nobody around.I  called the contact person and i had to wait another 15mins before we went in together into the office ,she called her boss who had given the time of appointment as 7am , he was on his way as at 8;30am(sigh!!!) . I left , he hadn’t arrived even after a 30min wait, while I was seated, I kept thinking to my self , if all my clients are like this how do i pay my bills and plan towards retirement!!! .It dawned on me  that i need to identify who my clients are( will share on this in another post) .I take time seriously amongst other values , for me Time is a form of currency i spend ( Time na money) , i later got a call around 9;30 saying the Oga is around asking if i could come back , by that time i was at another meeting so i couldn’t , wouldn’t have even if i could , little wonder a lot of businesses fold up due to lack of diligence.

When I got home ,  I quietly went through my Makeup Service Contract . Sadly , i do  have a contract but i don’t usually stick with it,i  did a revised edition and added more points to fit my business requirement. I also made a soft copy so i can email to client.

Redefining Friendship in Business.

Hi there beautiful people,

I am with you as always even though I have had to take little time out for my spiritual consciousness which I once talked about here. On this journey, I have realized that I am blessed with a good number of friends. The number of “friends “on social media can be misleading so I am thankful for real people who not only follow me but that we have a connection .

Image may be NSFW.

working-together-teamwork-puzzle-concept

The truth is people get carried away by the number of friends and followers they have on social media and forget or should I say neglect their real friends. Thankfully, I have been able to categorize my friends into 3 major segments:
1. The people I have met in person with whom I share some connection with and I am interested in keeping in touch with regularly.
2. Friends of friends that I meet at an event or through work and I am interested in pursuing further friendship with.
3. Strictly work based connection with whom I am comfortable with at arm’s length.

All my friends emanated from different areas of my life – church, school, work, events, business, social media etc. I also like to critically examine the relationships in my life by weighing the value each brings so that I don’t waste time and energy nurturing the wrong friendship that can unintentionally bring me down or make me aim lower. I believe ultimately in making myself happy while trying to please others.

Attitude is one key ingredient that I look out for when making friends. Do they make me feel great after each conversation; can we talk about everything honestly? Can they offer helpful advice, will I feel empowered and not stressed, threatened or exploited.

I have had a good number of instances that I have had serious issues in defining friendship in business, trust me if I penciled that down here it would really be a very long post. Anyways, I have done a general analysis of my thoughts on the subject.

Here are a few issues to note when dealing with friends in business:

State your normal price and offer them discount otherwise you might be wasting energy, time and resources, I will advise you do a 20% discount .Handle your transaction as professional as can be, learn to speak your mind .
If they don’t appreciate you, move on and don’t allow yourself to be humiliated, mocked or disgraced especially when your dignity is attacked .

Some people will do anything to use you for their person gain. Beware!!!

Always take out time for yourself (Me Time), whatever decision you are going to make still depends on you, learn to be your own best friend and think peacefully without pressure.

Create a balance with your friends in order for them to respect your business.

Establish boundaries.

Encourage each other especially on personal growth and improvement.

Learn to accept the truth from each other.

Listen to each other and help resolve problems.

I have been blessed with some long standing friendship from high school, some of whom I still keep regular contact with till date .My friend Aramide Oluwateniola Harrison is one of them, she represents true friendship. I have known her for over 25 years. She is a chartered account and a great sister from another mother in whom I am very proud. She has been my number one fan, marketer and supporter.

Ebola and You.

Hiya people,

We are in another season of something alien to us , we have had about the anthraxs , bird flus and the rest of them. I honestly thought this was going to pass  alas it still here with us – the almighty Ebola Virus.

I am pretty sure that it is no longer news about the outbreak of deadly Ebola virus , trust me  it is scary. In the three countries affected by the outbreak —Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea — more than 1,300 people have been sickened by the virus and more than 700 have died.

I am more concerned about how vulnerable we Makeup Artist are. I can’t overemphasize the importance of stocking up on alcohol, hand sanitizers and brush cleaning essentials to prevent the spread. I did a little bit of research and here are some of the things I discovered.

The Ebola virus (its name comes from the Ebola River in Zaire, site of the first known outbreak) causes an illness known as hemorrhagic fever. It is characterized by aches, fever, abdominal pain, organ failure, and uncontrolled bleeding. A person who has Ebola is contagious for up to 21 days. Spread of the infection occurs by direct contact with body fluids. There is no known cure, and half or more of those who develop Ebola virus disease die from it.

Prevention
1. Frequently wash your hands with soap and water, or use alcohol-based hand rubs containing at least 60 percent alcohol when soap and water aren’t available.

2. Avoid buying or eating meats sold in local open markets.

3 Avoid sweaty crowd where you rub on each other, due to overpopulation – like commuter buses, labour jobs, and places of worship with maddening crowd and little ventilation. Most especially avoid local burial ceremonies where the cause of death is not known

4. If you can, avoid traveling around for now till the scourge is contained.

5. And sadly, if you feel any of the symptoms like unexplainable high fever, bleeding, quickly quarantine yourself/ separate yourself from your families and friends while you go on a massive fluid intake, to save other people around you.

6.Avoid contact with infected people. In particular, caregivers should avoid contact with the person’s body fluids and tissues, including blood, semen, vaginal secretions and saliva

Follow infection-control procedures. If you’re a health care worker, wear protective clothing, such as gloves, masks, gowns and eye shields. Keep infected people isolated from others. Dispose of needles and sterilize other instruments.

More preventive tips for Makeup Artist
Make sure you sanitize your hands frequently. Dettol Hand sanitizer or any other brand.

detol-hand-sanitizer

Use isopropyl alcohol of 90% or greater to sanitize any tools including tweezers, scissors and lash curlers. Be sure the alcohol has evaporated before using the tool on the client.

When working with a client, use a spatula to place lipstick or gloss on a palette and apply with a lip brush. If you need to apply directly from the bullet, sanitize the lipstick with isopropyl alcohol of 90% or greater and remove the top layer by wiping with a tissue.Image may be NSFW.

Sanitize makeup pencils by sharpening them between clients. A spritz of alcohol and sharpening in between applications will comfort your clients as well. Do not forget to clean your sharpener each time too.

Keep disposable wands in your kit for mascara application and never double dip the wand. Mascara is one of the highest risk products.

563949_467451269940753_775915562_n

Create your own sanitizing spritz in an empty spray bottle. A fine mist of alcohol of 70% or greater can also work but be careful it does not compromise the texture of the product. Let the alcohol evaporate from the product to be most effective.

Clean brushes in between every client with brush cleaner or alcohol.

Qtips – great for a applying concealer or foundation over an open wound. Also you can dip into loose powder to set.

Never use the same sponge on more than one person

Sanitize, clean and wipe all tools and products in front of your client to make sure they know you are hygienic and follow health and safety precautions and procedures ,you owe it to the different people you are working on to practice good hygiene and reduce the spread of germs  and infection.

Self Esteem.

Hiya people ,

Have you had your salt water bath today ?? No ?? How about bitter Kola?? Image may be NSFW.

:-)
, the week has been one with so many discoveries and postulations on the cure of Ebola . I would just like to say this before some people kill themselves , I read somewhere people were hospitalized for over salt intake – when you get any information take time out to verify its source ,don’t just jump on the band wagon.Trust me that wagon might just be on a set path to death.

On a lighter note, I stumbled on a song that has been inspiring to me all week. Why would I want to be someone else when I can be me.Everyone is trying to be someone else ,masking how unhappy they are by seeking false pleasure.

Image may be NSFW.

index

I am not ashamed of my black skin and I wont alter it for anything
I love my natural dreadlocks
I can go without makeup and still feel pretty
I won’t Photoshop/Airbrush my pictures to look like perfection,if you look closely you will see my flaws and I love them just the way they are.I love the body I live in.

It’s not only about how you look but also how you live.I am a makeup artist by choice and I won”t trade this for anything because this is what I love to do and I have been able to turn it into a career .I do not strive to be popular or famous, I just want to help and encourage someone to be better.I have learnt that being overly ambitious can be fatal, there is a need to learn to create a balance and celebrate your seemingly little victories that brings true fulfillment.

Do what ever makes you feel good and try not to impress anyone to be accepted .For instance ,If you’re fat and you feel the need to lose some weight, you should lose that weight not to impress men but because it’s important to stay healthy. If you feel unattractive, there is nothing wrong with wearing makeup to look pretty. I have been working on building my 6 abs and I am yet to achieve that – I ain’t giving up yet Image may be NSFW.

Let’s encourage, love and lift each other up. Absolutely no need to tear each other down.
Try to be you! That is what the song is saying. If you try to be you, others will like you for you. And soon you’ll end up liking yourself too :)·

Lyrics

Put your make-up on

Get your nails done
Curl your hair
Run the extra mile
Keep it slim so they like you, do they like you?

Get your sexy on
Don’t be shy, girl
Take it off
This is what you want, to belong, so they like you
Do you like you?

You don’t have to try so hard
You don’t have to, give it all away
You just have to get up, get up, get up, get up
You don’t have to change a single thing

You don’t have to try, try, try, try
You don’t have to try, try, try, try
You don’t have to try, try, try, try
You don’t have to try
You don’t have to try

Get your shopping on, at the mall, max your credit cards
You don’t have to choose, buy it all, so they like you
Do they like you?

Wait a second,
Why, should you care, what they think of you
When you’re all alone, by yourself, do you like you?
Do you like you?

You don’t have to try so hard
You don’t have to, give it all away
You just have to get up, get up, get up, get up
You don’t have to change a single thing

You don’t have to try, try, try, try
You don’t have to try, try, try, try
You don’t have to try
You don’t have to try

Take your make-up off
Let your hair down
Take a breath
Look into the mirror, at yourself
Don’t you like you?
Cause I like you

Hope you like you.

How to remove makeup 5 easy steps.

Hello Lovelies,

The rainy season is gradually coming to an end  ……Yipeeee !!!! and this  could only mean one thing  – the parties are here in their splendor Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
:)
. Never mind me a girls got to make a living **covers face**

Speaking of which ,sometimes last week my Divalicious Mummy Mrs Aderemi Adeyemo(kisses) asked me if i could shed light on how to remove make up and that got me thinking  – how do most ladies remove makeup from their faces everyday ! Trust me I should get a medal for being lazy about removing makeup from my face but when i remember the almighty breakout and pimples , i jump up to get it done.

Taking off makeup is so important if you want to maintain a spotless face.Note however that I am not talking about your skin care regime but the way you take off makeup from your face.

Here are the ways to take of makeup easily

1. Taking off your eye makeup. Mascara , eyeliners and eyeshadow are the hardest and also remember that the skin around the eye is very sensitive. Use a gentle eye makeup remover , put a little in a cotton ball place  on your lids, eyelashes for a few seconds and swipe .I use MAC Eye and lips makeup remover.

2.Steam your face if you can  this helps to break down foundation and powder product and also opens up your pore and ,makes your cleaning very easy.

3.Clean your lips with a wipe or apply a small amount of petrolatum jelly to your lips, and gently rub and wipe off your lips.

4.Use a face wash or soap and water and wash all the last traces of makeup and dirt off your skin so that your skin can breathe.I use Black opal face wash.

 Image may be NSFW.

images

5.Dab your face dry and apply a little bit of face moisturizer to soothe your skin. I use Venus light moisture  face cream

Another faster way is to use baby wipe or makeup wipes to take off your makeup if you are too tired .They work great and they are cheap! I prefer Makeup Wipes because it cleans better.i use MAC Wipes

Remember to wash and clean your makeup brushes regularly , do not share makeup products, try not to sleep with your makeup on ,if you can go bare face (without makeup for some days) do ,so that your skin breathe.

Kudos to all the women who go through the rigors of applying makeup and removing it every day.

I would like to learn from you, how do you take off your makeup and what products do you use?

Till my next post, wash your hands and sanitize regularly.

Hugs and kisses ,

Online Presence 101 – Part 1

Hiya people,
It’s great to be in the month of September and contrary to popular belief and opinion, I don’t see how the “ember” months are any different from the rest of the months in the year. For what it’s worth, for me it signifies the end of the rainy season – Yippee weddings galore and of ‘cos Christmas – my best season ever.

Ok, ok before I get carried away with all the jingling bells, here’s something new we will be doing, well not entirely new but then I would be bringing your attention to what you know and don’t know. As usual it’s been a barrage of questions on how I am able to attain an online presence especially as I don’t do gossip and entertainment Nigerians love  .

I asked my consultant (don’t get scared that’s just a fancy name to make you respect him) if he would be kind enough to do a once a month series until you guy are good to go. So here we go below enjoy …… the rest of the post is him doing his thing.

———————————————————————————————————————————–

Hi there ladies and maybe gentlemen,
Glad to be on this platform and welcome to the world of proactive online presence. This would be targeted at beauty experts, makeup artist etc but the principles can be applied to pretty much anything once you get the core concept.

Here’s how we will do this – it’s going to be very elementary , just like the way we were taught in primary school that stuck with us , so don’t be cross if I don’t begin with all the big words , the big idea is for you to be able to use whatever you read here.

First of all, it’s important for you to appreciate and understand the internet in order to be able to use it properly. Consider the image below, understand that the world is at the center of it all, the internet is the web that connects the whole world together, which means you can spin your internet web from Lagos ,Nigeria to connect someone in Paris, France , pretty nice isn’t it? Image may be NSFW.

;)
. You have become some sort of internet super hero.

Spider_web

Now that we are clear let’s move on to what the internet is and what it is not. The internet is not just for connecting to an ISP so you can be on facebook , or chat with your friends on BBM , don’t get me wrong these are all great platforms we will be talking about later.
The internet is what you make out of it, let’s quickly look at the story of Psy , don’t know him ? Ok let me refresh your memory with this video ….

Contrary to what people believe Psy isn’t actually not a one day wonder that just shot out of the blues, this guy had been performing and practicing for 15 years no success until he used what I call one of the greatest platform in the world – YouTube. This guy who had been struggling for years now has 2 billion views on YouTube…..you don’t want to know how much he makes from each click.

So what are we saying here?? I am only trying to prepare your mind for what is to come, we will evaluate in steps how the internet can be your play ground using some great applications and platforms. Catch you sometimes later but till then keep exploring – the world is yours.

Educational Requirement for Makeup Artist.

Image may be NSFW.

index

“Aunty Yem, I want to become a professional makeup artist, what course should I study in the University?” This was the question a cousin of mine who just finished secondary school asked me over the weekend and I thought to shed more light on this subject.

Developing a career path early can save you years of unnecessary waste of time. There are so many unorthodox careers taking center stage these days. – Photography, Event planning, DJ-ing, Dancing etc

When I was a kid, I wanted to become a banker because I loved the way they always looked smart and sharp. By the time I was through with secondary school, I wasn’t so sure anymore about banking, I knew I was very good at craft and I was already making lovely beads to sell, this was what I was comfortable with.

I was admitted to study Economics at tertiary level but by my 2nd year I was already bored and by the time I was done with University I was already a freelance Makeup artist .I went further to complete my youth service and worked for a while but eventually followed my passion and started Nsure Beauty studio with my partner (Folayemi).

So back to the crux of the matter – What educational requirement do you need to become a Makeup Artist?
If your dream is to become a makeup artist, my honest opinion is that it is very important to have at LEAST a secondary school leaving certificate- the basic stuff. I am also strongly of the school of thought that if you do have the wherewithal to go further, by all means do that. Obtaining a higher degree is a plus and like I always say education sets the platform for you to be whoever or whatever you want to be.

So far I have met people who studied courses like Business Admin, Marketing, Accounting, Economics, Mass Communication, Theatre arts, law, Engineering, Bio chemist, Dentist etc that are also makeup artists and are doing very well

There is really no identifiable structured educational requirement in Nigeria yet, however what can work for you are the few vocational institutes and Makeup studios that offer formal trainings which is relevant as they have relevant experience from plying the trade too. The Caveat to you is to be sure the trainer knows his/her onions.

Duties of a makeup artist

Read up here

Salary
There is no structured pay check; it all depends on how often you work and how you are able to market your skill. A Bridal make-up artist can earn between N480, 000 –N10m per annual depending on clientele.

Types of makeup artist
Beauty Counter
These makeup artists work at major makeup brand counters/ floors, they help client with basic beauty tips and application based on their product knowledge for example Black up, MAC, Inglot etc
Fashion
These Makeup artists are In charge of looks for fashion events, runways, front cover magazine .They are very artistic and creative
Body and Face Painting
They Paint the faces of children and also create artistic designs on the body.
Theater and Television
Anyone who appears before a camera needs a makeup artist to help them look their best. The artist must be able to create movie characters based on scripts and understand lighting.
Bridal Makeup artist
They help to make you look good on your special event like wedding, birthday; family photo shoot etc, in the Nigeria market ability to tie head gear is a bonus.

I conclude by saying to become a professional makeup artist, it would help if you have the necessary training and also work on your skill by attending a makeup school with proper curriculum and experience not a crash class, definitely not a 3 days training class, you won’t learn much.

I would love to know if you are a makeup artist, how did you start out, which course did you read and where did you train? Do you have any advice for other aspiring makeup artists?

Till my next post.

Cleaning your makeup box and tools.

Howdy blog Fam ,

I see red all over , it’s the month of love and I have to quickly steal a few words of prayer to  say to all the lovers and expectant brides to be – He will propose in Jesus name and of ‘cos when he does make sure I get to beat your face  Image may be NSFW.

:)
.Pardon me , I just couldn’t resist the sales pitch.

Ok so back to the business of the day , I have had a lot of people ask me how I carry my makeup products around and my answer to them is simple –  I use a  backpack. I got my Zuca backpack from Gifty’s daughter and ever since then ,  I pretty much go ever where with it (bridal job, photoshoot etc.)

I particularly  love to travel light, so I invested in a lot of PRO palettes as against  going everywhere with my entire makeup kit , trust me when  I say building a pro makeup kit costs a fortune so it only makes sense to use palettes which can easily help in taking a quick inventory after the job . The backpack also helps  to evenly distribute weight on my shoulder as against the makeup box that I carry with one hand that are more difficult to carry, I have several makeup boxes but I  seldom carry them and only use them for storage ,they tend more to announce you and give you away as a makeup artist. Finally, my Zuca backpack is very spacious and  can carry my camera and flat iron etc all at once.

I have seen some makeup artists’ boxes and I am so disgusted, they look like a hot mess with powder and lipstick stain everywhere – all i can say is eewwh!!!!. Cleaning your makeup tools and box is a MUST as dirty tools always breed bacteria, I can say this as a matter of fact that when your kit and box are neat and clean, your client is usually  confident and at rest . I make sure that after ever job I always clean up my tools using baby wipes and Alcohol to clean each product and I also wash my brushes .I don’t enjoy doing the cleaning but hey it’s what I  have to do.

Here’s what I have going ……

No to violence on MUAs !!!

Howdy People ,

I never thought in my wildest dreams that there would be a time that I would afraid for what humanity is becoming.I mean a simple processes of life that you would never have thought would turn out to be complicated have been twisted and trampled upon especially by the women folk who feel that for some reason they are more superior than others.

A friend of mine who happens to be a makeup artist in Abuja was violently abused on Saturday afternoon.I received this news with utter disbelief and shock , in Nigeria here someone could feel she has the right to ruthlessly molest another human being because she is a “big madam” …. I am sorry I care less who you are , you try that with me you better be ready to kill me. Ok …. let me take a deep breath so I will not promote more violence here.

My friend was beaten, strangled and tormented for over 1 hour at a client’s house. What really did my head in when I heard the story is the  client insisted she used water to wash her face and proceed to do the makeup after beating her blue.My gosh!!!! even when we had animal skin to cover our privates I don’t think humanity was this cruel.

My friend practically begged and pleaded for her life before she was let go, get this she had to beg to be let out the woman’s mini torture chamber….wonderful!!!!. Her phones were destroyed , she was given drink to digest the beating with and was asked to come back the next day for another round of beating maybe.

I am livid about this experience, this is utter madness , my guess is if my friend had died or had passed out in the process, her body could easily have been dumped somewhere. I understand she was referred by another makeup artist to do the job for the client so the situation could easily have gone south.

I am so glad she survived and she was able to share her ordeal, she sounded a lot  better when I spoke to her over the phone.I am also glad that it didn’t have to be totally disastrous before we could learn a thing or two from this experience.

I believe it won’t be out of place to encourage whoever isn’t a part of the Makeup artist Guild of Nigerian to do so pronto .The mandate of the guild is to be an active authoritative voice promoting integrity and high standards within the beauty industry. Issues such as this will be handled by the guild and we longer have to suffer in silence alone. The Guild will pursue all powers within its reach to bring an end to this injustice. This could easily have been any makeup artist so I implore you not to brush the note of warning aside. Our booking process is a fairly simple one :

1.You get a call from a client you hardly know to make inquiries about your availability and service charge

2.Payment is made

3. Show up at agreed location

The truth is it is the simplicity of this booking process that leads to my friend’s experience It is particularly dangerous now that we are approaching the yuletide season. Please try to discern the jobs you take as some of these clients feast on your ability to jump at any offer

Tips on how to protect yourself

  1. Make sure you find out location and make sure someone else close to you has it
  2. Always insist on at least 70percent deposit payment before that day.
  3. Always make call in front of the client confirming to a close friend or family member when you arrive at location and call out the address right in front of the client before you start makeup application at all.
  4. If possible go with an assistant.

What are the safety measures you put in place , kindly share in the comment box below

Till my next post ,

hugs and kisses

How to Tie Gele [Free Video]

Hi there beautiful people,

The Christmas season is undoubtedly my best season ever and in the spirit of the season and the fact that I have promised you wonderful goodies as we progress, today I will be giving away this gele tying free video.

The art of tying gele I have seen is a great thorn in the flesh of some women , I mean it just never sits properly or doesn’t just fit into that event you have been preparing for for several weeks .The good news is you don’t have to be left behind by your husband anymore or you don’t have to always run late for that event and yes because I love you so very much Image may be NSFW.

Makeup Investment – What you need to Save and Splurge on.

Hello beauties,

How are all hanging in there ? I know right , this year seems to be speeding along like it’s on a mission to get to the end in no time. It’s been an eventful first quarter and as you would have noticed I have kind of slowed down on my updates but no to worry I am going to show time it’s got nothing on me Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
:)
.

I just about realized in my reminiscent mood that I have also slowed down in my makeup acquisition fetish .In the first quarter of this year , I haven’t bought a lot of makeup products like I would have done. I think this is largely due to the exchange rate which has affected the prices of products in the market.

I almost had a heart attack when I found out that my favorite Black Up foundation which used to be N7,000  is now sold for N13,000 …… I couldn’t berieve(sic) it mehn!

Ok, so in this post we would be looking at a question that has been posed to me several times , to save or to splurge? , if only they knew they were talking to a “splurger-by-nature'” ….. Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
:)
, never mind me – it’s not that bad yet , I think .

First let’s understand the basics , putting together a makeup kit either for Personal or Pro use isn’t that simple. You must first have a budget in mind and work towards that. There are some must-have makeup items that you can not afford not to have even if they are expensive.

You need a great makeup Brush set because it enhances your application . Good quality is key it .You can buy Real Technique, I particularly like its stippling brush, also Kuddy Cosmestics , Zaron cosmestic, Hegai and Esther to mention a few

For Makeup Removers, you can use  good quality coconut oil and save on getting makeup remover.

Primers and Oil control – Its important we have a primer that helps to make the makeup last longer Sonia Kashuk brightening Primer, BECCA Ever-Matte Poreless Priming Perfector. They help to keep your make up  flawless all day especially with our hot weather.

Another item to Splurge on is Foundation. The weather in Nigeria  is very hot  and when selecting a foundation it’s an important factor to consider . It means you will have to opt for  mattifying foundations (BlackUp mattifying foundation, Marykay Matte wear, Maybelline Fit me, Revlon Colour stay, Black Opal Even Tue) to mention a few good foundation .

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
images

Powder also should be bought based on skin type and the coverage you want to achieve. It could be in a compact / pressed form or a loose powder.Brands like MAC Mineralise, Maybelline, Fashion Fashion, Covergirl,Tara, Milani,Kuddy Cosmestics, to many a few are readily available here.

Invest in a great gel liner because they can serve multiple purpose ( use it on the eyebrow as eyeliner for lining the waterline and you can dip a clean mascara wand to act as a mascara) Try BLOT eyeliner from gifty daughters / Hegai and Esther brow gel and Inglot gel liner .

The following items you can SAVE ON

Blush and Bronzers

Concealers ( I currently use L.A Girl and it works fine it)

Mascara ( I use Maybelline Rocket Volume Masacra)

Eyeliner ( Pencil, Marker , gel liner)

Eyeshadow / Lipstick  / Makeup setting mist/ Eye shadow primer/Contour kit/Lashes /Lash glue all listed items are based on personal preference.

What makeup item do you invest in and which do you save on .Kindly share below

Hugs and Kisses.

Building Your Professional Makeup Kit.

Alrighty, back to the subject matter of this post , I have had a lot of client ask why the rates of makeup artist vary from one artist to another, I have tried several times to break it down although it always seems like a difficult task . I have tried to make them understand though that one major factor aside from years of experience and skill is the product they have in their kit.

Building a pro makeup kit takes time and it is an investment even though I am pretty certain many don’t see it that way . However, there are a lot of factors to consider such as product knowledge, the weather, skin type, ingredients, brand awareness etc.

Your kit should be streamlined along the lines of the type of makeup artist you are i.e Bridal, Special Effects , Runway, Fashion etc.

When putting together a pro makeup kit, it is very important to note that the products you are expected to have in your kit are for professional .It’s simple really, the same way you won’t expect a doctor to treat you with a first aid kit is the same way is the same way you wouldn’t want to attend to a client with what could be best described as an emergency kit.

What you have or don’t have in your kit separates an expert from an amateur, to stand out you need to let go of favoritism and focus on selecting practical essentials and time tested products with benefits .

Quality over Quantity should always be your watch word but this doesn’t mean you should stock up on the expensive products, note that  because it is expensive does not mean it’s good quality. Permit me to say that some expensive brands are worthless as they do not fit into helping you achieve the best for your client. It is essential for you to always do your research, ask questions at the beauty counter and read product review from reputable blogs and professionals.

Some brands like  Elf, NYX, Wet and wild, L.A Girl, Maybelline, Coastal scent, BH cosmetic, Citi color, Plush, cover girl, Mabrook are inexpensive but good.

Mid Range such as Revlon , L’Oreal, Crown brush, Real technique, MAC, Sigma, Urban Decay, Stilla , Ben Nye, Sephora, Zaron, Tara, BM PRO, BLOT cosmetics, Makeup Revolution,Maybelline, Mehron, Prestige, Face Atelier, l.o.g cosmetics( Natural line) Sonia Kashuk, Hegai&Esther, Morphe, Black Opal, Mary Kay , Kuddy, Sleek , Nos 7, Milani, Color Pop, Anastasia Beverly Hills are also good

Expensive brands like Make Up For Ever, Illamasqua, YSL, Gucci, Armani, Guerlain ,Nars, Channel , Lancôme, Christian Dior, Black UP, Becca, Bobbi Brown, Laura Mercier,  are also options to be considered.

Also make sure all the products in your pro makeup kit are original because we deal with the skin, I can tell you for free that you will end up with one angry client.Always remember, buying FAKE product is NOT an option.I have made it a point of duty to preach on health and safety after my nasty experience with a FAKE product.

The first thing you need is something to keep all your products safe and also move around with. I prefer a case that is made of fabric and has wheels, I dislike the hard metal cases because with time they can get scratched and dismantled. It is easier to wheel around my case especially when I have to travel. I bought ZUCA backpack from Gifty’s Daughter 5 years ago and I am still rocking it, I use it for location jobs .I use big hand bags and clear pouches from Beauty Essentials by N’sure (B.E.N) to pack to my clients that I already know to reduce load.

Makeup Brushes

Visine/ Red Eye Drops

Most brides always end up with red eyes due to lack of sleep on their wedding day , first ask if the client has any allergy to visine, if not use the visine before you start the makeup application.

Foundations

It’s important to have different types / forms/shade/ colors of foundations in your kit that will work any skin tone and shade, it could be a palette or single shade although pallets works best when working on more than one client.

DIY Face Mask with Tumeric ,Honey & Rice Flour ( brighter glowing skin)

Happy New Month beauties,

I became a big fan of natural products after my nasty experience with my lips and I must confess I am loving it. I am no longer afraid if the ingredients will harm my skin / health. The  journey has been exciting ( thanks Mcherbal) for making it easier,I get all my Natural supply from this company ( based in Turkey) high quality  and affordable price.
I can proudly say that my skin is now healthy and clean. I am not a dermatologist but from my research and experiment , my going natural journey is almost complete( hair & skincare) working on my diet too:-) I am so pleased with my result.
Today, I used tumeric flour , Rice flour and honey as a face mask. Read Below for details

Turmeric contains a photochemical called curcumin, which can benefit the body. Tumeric does a lot of great work on the body.It is great for acne ,eczema, reduces wrinkles,it is anti inflammatory and rejuvenates the skin.

One major reason I love tumeric is it acts as an exfoliator and skin brightener, makes your skin look fresh and youthful.

My basic recipe below

1 teaspoon of turmeric
1 teaspoon of raw organic honey
1 teaspoon of rice flour

You can add to the above mixture 1 tsp. of lemon juice (helps lighten the skin and good for oily skin) and/or a few drops of tea tree essential oil if you suffer from acne or glycerin oil for smooth skin.
Get a clean bowl , pour the teaspoon of , make sure you apply to a freshly washed face. Apply all over  the face ( under eye inclusive) Allow the mask dry on your face , leave it on for 20 minutes and then wash it off with cool water. Dry your face gently with a cloth.Repeat the mask over the course of a few days. You can do it every few weeks, depending on your needs and complexion.
Honey is  an anti bacterial and moisturizer. Rice flour is a bit coarse and acts as a exfoliant and removes excess oil from the skin.it also helps to tighten the skin.
The brand I love to use and can recommend is MC herbal, they have in stock great quality product . Essential oils such as Glycerin, rose water, almond oil, tea tree, peppermints etc. Powders such orange peel, lemon extract, dandelion , tumeric, rice flour to mention a few.
Have you every tried using any natural product as face mask? What were your result ? kindly drop your feed back in the comment box.
Till my next post,
Hugs and kisses
